READING ARTICLE

A People often focus on education as a way to help children grow into successful adults. However, it is worth considering the importance of parents and home life in this process. According to research, what happens at home may actually have a larger influence on us than what happens at school.

B Our society has changed a lot in the last 30 or 40 years. The organisation of many families has changed. These days there are many single parent families and families where both parents go out to work. It is also true that many grandparents are less involved than they used to be in the past. Our social life has changed as technology has advanced. We now live much of our lives on mobile devices. Many children communicate with other children through online game playing, social media sites and messaging. We also have 24/7 access to entertainment. This has all had a big effect on our children.

C So, what do researchers believe is the way to promote well-being and success for our children? Firstly, they say that children benefit from eating dinner with their families at least five times a week. It encourages a sense of being part of a group and provides a space to talk.

D It's also important to limit the amount of time a child spends using tablets and smartphones. Apparently, too much time spent on these devices can lead to a lack of focus, attention, vocabulary and social skills. Instead, parents are advised to read to their younger children and to encourage older children to read for themselves.

E Research also shows that giving children chores to do around the home can help them become successful adults who can focus on a task and understand that a job needs to be done. Although children do well when their parents are with them as much as possible, apparently there can be benefits for girls who have working mothers. It seems that seeing their mothers have careers, encourages young women to do well both academically and at work.

F Finally, researchers say you should take your children on holiday. Research shows that people who travel more as children, especially when they go abroad, grow up into positive and successful adults. Travel encourages children to explore, be open-minded and to learn from their experiences.

MAGAZINE INTERVIEW — GEORGINA HAYLEY

Interviewer: Georgina Hayley, you are, probably, the most successful businesswoman in the world today. So, what is the secret of your success?

Georgina: Well, I suppose luck is a big part of it. I have a very supportive family and I was lucky to have a great education. My parents made a lot of sacrifices so I could go to university.

Interviewer: That's true. However, that's also true of a lot of other people who haven't become as successful as you.

Georgina: I suppose it is, yes.

Interviewer: So would you say that you are just naturally clever?

Georgina: No, in fact I struggled at school. But I had some great teachers who encouraged me and my parents always taught me that it's OK to fail. When you fail, you ask yourself why you failed and then you just start again and do it differently the next time.

Interviewer: So you never give up?

Georgina: No. They taught me that you have to keep trying and that you have to work hard. My parents also gave me jobs to do around the house as a child.

Interviewer: So, do you think it's important for children to do chores?

Georgina: Yes, it's very important. They have to learn life skills. Having chores taught me to be responsible and value hard work.

Interviewer: But if children are really busy, will they have time to play or meet friends? Free time is important, too, isn't it?

Georgina: Absolutely! Children need to be able to have fun, relax and see friends. It's about finding the right balance.

2Complete the essay with the words and phrases in the box.
as well asfor example howeverI believe in shortwhile
Is working from home the perfect way to deal with office politics and crowded public transport? Will it make us happier, healthier people or is it actually creating lonely employees?

A For many modern workers, their journey to work is less than a minute, and their office clothes generally include pyjamas and slippers. This is because working from home is on the increase. Some people believe this is the perfect working arrangement. It means that you can pop out to the shops in the middle of the day, have that tenth cup of coffee without anyone raising eyebrows, and, most importantly for many, no boss watching what you are doing. , I would like to argue that this is not the whole story, as working from home can also negatively affect workers.

B it keeps costs down for companies and travel time down for employees, home working also leaves people feeling alone and without support. They sit on their own in a room or space in their house and may not talk to or see anyone for the whole day. This cannot be good for someone's mental or social well-being. Humans are sociable animals, which means that we need to be around other humans.

C cutting people off from social contact, home working can make employees feel more stressed. , imagine there's a document you need in order to get on with your work. You send an email to a colleague, but you don't receive an answer immediately. You sit there, waiting and waiting for a reply. This can be very frustrating.

D , we need to be aware of the negative effect that home working can have on some people. that companies should make sure their employees have regular contact with each other and with their bosses, have the opportunity to socialise with colleagues and get the support they need.

3Which statement best describes the writer's opinion?
4Match paragraphs A–D to functions 1–4.
1. Introduce your first main point.
2. State what the topic is and what the main dilemma of the topic is. Include an overall view.
3. Summarise and repeat your overall opinion.
4. Introduce your second main point.
5Read the Focus box then match supporting examples 1–3 with paragraphs B–D in the essay.
USING SUPPORTING EXAMPLES

When writing an essay, it is usual to support opinions with examples. You can introduce these supporting examples with the phrase for example, but often you don't use a linking word or phrase.

1. A recent study found that most office workers spend a minimum of two hours a day talking to their colleagues. → paragraph
2. Imagine when you want a second opinion on something, but you have no one to ask. → paragraph
3. For example, one large technology company organises social events for employees that work at home more than three days a week. → paragraph
6Read another essay on the same topic. Why does this writer disagree with the first writer?
Why working from home helps achieve a healthy work-life balance.

More and more people today are working from home. Some people work from home all the time, while others work from home just a few days a week. 1 ___

It is true that homeworkers sometimes feel isolated from the people and events in the office. However, I would argue that the benefits of working from home far outweigh any disadvantages.

It is clear that working from home is more cost effective for the employer and the employee. 2 ___

As well as being cost effective, homeworkers say that they are more productive at home than they would be in an office. They get more work done in less time. 3 ___

What's more, working from home helps employees to achieve a better work-life balance. The flexibility allows them to work around their friends and family. 4 ___

In short, I believe that homeworking is the future. 5 ___ It's time to let go of traditional ideas about business and embrace the future.

7Complete the essay with the supporting examples a–f. There is one example you do not need.
