Past continuous — Loch Ness story
Complete the story with the past continuous or past simple form of the verbs in brackets.
In August last year, I 1 around Scotland with a friend of mine for a month. In Fort William we 2 with an old friend of ours from university and he 3 to us about Loch Ness, which is a lake that is famous because some people believe a monster called Nessie lives in it.

We 4 to go there the next day. While we 5, we 6 a lot of beautiful trees and mountains. Finally, after an hour, we 7 beside Loch Ness. It 8 like a big black mirror.

The necklace mystery — find the thief
Last Saturday at 7 p.m. someone stole an expensive necklace from a house in your neighbourhood. You are a police officer interviewing the neighbours (your classmates). Ask questions with the past continuous (e.g. What were you doing at 7 p.m. on Saturday?) to find out what each person was doing, and write their name in each gap below. One person is lying about what they were doing — who do you think stole the necklace?

Role cards (A–J)
Each student takes one role card. Use the past continuous to answer the police officer's questions, thinking about where you were, what you were doing/watching/etc., and who you were with. Student J actually stole the necklace and must lie about what they were doing!

Sentence card game
Work in pairs or small groups with a set of word cards (shuffled, face down). Take turns turning over two cards and try to make a correct sentence using because, so, or to + infinitive. If you make a correct sentence, keep both cards. If you can't make a sentence, the cards go back on the desk. The player with the most cards at the end wins. Try to use as many of the collocations below as possible.
